In Memory of Past Board Member Joseph S. Baskovic

With heavy hearts we remember the life of past board member, Joseph S. Baskovic. Joe served on the National Board of Directors for many years with KSKJ Life. Joe was truly a selfless, kind, and honorable person.
Details on Joseph’s amazing life is below:
Joseph S. Baskovic , 94 years-old, passed away May 15, 2020. Joe was born Nov. 27, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio as the son of the late Joseph and Rose (nee Piltaver). Husband of the late Josephine “Pep” (nee Roznik). Brother of Elizabeth Novak (Paul John, deceased) and the late Vincent (Jean, deceased). Uncle of Janet Chase (Larry) and others; and great-uncle of many. Veteran, U.S. Navy, WWII. Joe and Pep resided for many decades on Bliss Avenue in the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood prior to moving to Willoughby Hills. He was in residence the past few years in an assisted living facility.
Joe graduated from St. Vitus Elementary School. He attended and graduated from East Tech High School, Class of 1943. Joe then enlisted in the US Navy. Upon honorable discharge he was employed at a local factory while also attending classes in the evening at Fenn College under the GI Bill. Joe graduated from Fenn College, Class of 1960, receiving a Bachelor of Science for business administration. He was primarily engaged as an accountant and contract price analyst for the Department of Defense, retiring after 26 years of service.
Joe enjoyed gardening, bowling, and traveling to the Republic of Slovenia and across the USA. Joe was a member of the following: St. Vitus Parish; St. Vitus Catholic War Veterans Post 1655; national board of directors, American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJ); officer, St. Vitus KSKJ Lodge #25; Holy Name Society; and Slovenian National Home St Clair Avenue Pensioners Club. Joe was a Eucharistic minister at St. Vitus Parish. He was a founding member, St. Vitus Parish Finance Council (1983). He served on the Review Committee, Mihevc (Scholarship) Grant Program at St. Vitus and on the Ad Hoc Committee to establish a parish endowment trust (est. 1989). He was also on the Ad Hoc Committee that established St Vitus Development Corporation, leading to the construction of St. Vitus Village (2000-2001). For many years Joe serve on the St. Vitus Summer and Fall festivals, each four to three days in duration, and was a member, parish summer parish picnic for a number of years. Joe served as a guest speaker/emcee for a number of community events in northeast Ohio, including the Ad Hoc Committee to invite and host the First US Ambassador to Republic of Slovenia, Honorable Allen Wendt to Cleveland. Joe was a volunteer member of a committee for the Mixed Singing Chorus Tour to USA/Canada, Peca. He was inducted into St Vitus Alumni Hall of Fame. He was affectionately referred to as “Mr. St. Vitus.” Joe was a kind, humble, decent human being, a mentor to many who had a good sense of humor, enjoyed the many little things in life such as a good conversation, good food and good refreshments. His decency and integrity were evident to all he encountered.
